Quick reference guide
B.K.S. Iyengar was born in Karnataka, South India, into a family of 13 children, 10 of whom are still alive. Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, his brother-in-law, introduced Iyengar to yoga through the yoga school he ran. Initially Iyengar was unsuccessful, and it was not until 1952, when Iyengar met Yehudi Menuhin, that he became world famous.
Menuhin suffered from insomnia and Iyengar taught him an asana through which he fell asleep and woke up so refreshed that he spent several hours with the yoga teacher and later believed that yoga helped him play the violin. Iyengar visited the West several times, where his yoga system was adopted by schools and centers.
Iyengar is committed to the idea of yoga as a spiritual activity and discipline, which he describes as the soul’s search for a spark of divinity within us. Students should have a spiritual awareness in every movement, as yoga is more than an aerobic or flexibility exercise system.
