But make no mistake, the game is still worth playing today, if only for the single player experience. But even though there aren’t that many players left, the multiplayer aspect of the game is still present and fun, and the popular game modes offer a breath of fresh air compared to what other shooters currently have to offer.
2. Omega Boost
From a game that came out almost yesterday, we go to a game that came out almost a lifetime ago, in 1999.
Developed by several Polyphony Digital employees, the same people behind the Gran Turismo games, Omega Boost was created using the limited technology of the original PlayStation.
To say that Omega Boost succeeded in the space mech battle is a given. You could move freely, as if you were literally controlling the mecha you were playing, which in an era where games are often clunky is a feat in itself.
The fact that the game features a fur designed by the famous designer Shoji Kawamori himself is just the icing on the cake.
3. BattleTech
What do you get when you focus turn-based tactical combat on mechs fighting each other? Lots of chaos and lots of fun!
Based on the board game of the same name, BattleTech puts you in the shoes of a mercenary commander in the middle of an interstellar civil war with a lot at stake. As a commander, players can do almost anything they want in the game: recruit, customize and develop their own mechs, called MechWarriors.
Every decision you make in the game has consequences, both good and bad, which gives the gameplay more weight and makes every fight much more meaningful.
If you’re a fan of turn-based games and mechs, there’s literally no reason why you shouldn’t try BattleTech.
4. Armored Core 3 : Silent line
From the release of the original Armored Core in 1997 to the last game, Armored Core: Conclusion of the day : The furry franchise had 15 international releases on consoles and generations in 2013.
It’s safe to say that this is a commercially successful franchise, and if the same people (FromSoftware) are behind Dark Souls, that should come as no surprise. But of all the games in this mech series, Armored Core 3: Silent Line should be the winner.
The second Armored Core game for the PlayStation 2, released in 2003, improved on all the elements of the previous games. The scenery is improved, the AI is better, the cockpit view in first-person is correct for the first time in the series, and some memorable missions are made even more memorable by the musical score.
However, make sure you don’t release the game for the PSP. It’s a bit of a shame. Stick with the original PlayStation 2 version and you’ll be satisfied.
5. Ender Zone 2 – Second runner

As with the Armored Core franchise, some games will always stand out in a long line of great games.
As far as MechWarrior games go, this is MechWarrior 4 : Vengeance, which was published by FASA in 2000. Developed in the same universe as BattleTech, MechWarrior is considered by many to be the ultimate mech game for a reason, and MechWarrior 4 is perhaps the culmination of it all.
MechWarrior 4 and its subsequent expansions excel at making the game’s often confusing customization system much more accessible, without sacrificing the depth that many fans have come to love when you get behind the wheel of giant robots on a fictional battlefield in the 31st century.
Starting today, MechWarrior 4: Vengeance remains more popular than the recently released MechWarrior Online, and will likely remain so unless MechWarrior 5 is released and exceeds expectations.
7. Falcon
Hawken, one of Titanfall’s few contemporaries, is a free-to-play online multiplayer game that is a great contrast to Respawn Entertainment’s often wild and chaotic gameplay.
In Hawken, mechas aren’t exactly known for their agility – you won’t be hovering and dancing with them. Instead, they’re giant, unwieldy, armored robots, which is probably what they should be, and in combat you don’t have to move around the battlefield so much as think about your actions – basically, the game is a mech for thinking people.
Don’t get me wrong. The battles are still relatively fast, there are occasional explosions, and thanks to the hypnotic view from the cockpit, it’s hard not to love this game.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to find – it’s no longer available on PC or Steam, so only those with a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can play it.
But if you have one of these consoles, do yourself a favor and buy Hawken. You won’t regret it.
8. Gundam Battle Assault 2
Based on the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam and developed in conjunction with Bandai, the second Gundam Battle Assault game for the original PlayStation at the end of its life cycle in 2002.
Unlike the usual mech games on our list, in Gundam Battle Assault 2 you can’t fly or fight in open space, and there’s no turn-based combat. Instead, the game feels more like an arcade fighting game like Street Fighter, where two players fight 1-on-1, and that works.
It may have helped that the game is rich in content, with a good story mode, survival mode and more.
Gundam Battle Assault 2 is a pretty unique version of a mech game. In addition to the arcade fighting game mechanics, the game also offers the player the ability to jump, which must be reloaded from time to time.
Weapons aren’t unlimited, ammo runs out, and the more damage you inflict on an enemy, the more appear, and the mechs often don’t look like the juggernauts they should be, but like prototypes sent to the scrap heap.
