Oregon’s quarterback is a baller. Not only is he a Top 5 dual-threat signal-caller nationally, but he also will be the Ducks’ first quarterback since Marcus Mariota to be drafted in the first round. That’s pretty awesome.
If you were watching the Oregon-South Carolina game on Saturday, you might have seen Stanford quarterback Justin Herbert make a 4th and 5th-down pass that would have gotten the ball to the 33-yard line with 2 minutes to play. In an instant, the ball was picked off by South Carolina defensive back Deebo Samuel, who returned it for a near-certain game-sealing touchdown. But, should you have been watching the Oregon-South Carolina game, you may have also seen Stanford quarterback Justin Herbert make a 4th and 5th-down pass that would have gotten the ball to the 33-yard line with 2 minutes to play. If you’re a Saints fan, you probably haven’t been too happy with what you’ve seen from your new quarterback this season. The guy hasn’t been good, and some of his mistakes have actually cost the team at least two points or so. But don’t worry, your new quarterback is in a conference where he should be able to make some plays, and he’s going to do it with his new phone.
Los Angeles Chargers rookie quarterback Justin Herbert is one of the revelations of the 2020 NFL season. The former Oregon Ducker had a surprisingly strong start to Week 2, with 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns. Although the Chargers found a new QB, they fired head coach Anthony Lynn at the end of the season.
Herbert now has a new coach Brandon Staley and a new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. The latter is no stranger to great QBs, and during the Chargers’ minicamp, one of Lombardi’s former students visited.
After 20 seasons and over 80,000 passes, Drew Brees ended his career after the 2020 season. He will work for NBC as a commentator starting in 2021. So he visited the franchise that trained him and his former coach.
At the time, the San Diego Chargers selected Brees from Purdue with the 32nd pick. Picked in the 2001 draft. After five seasons with the team, the Chargers let Brees go in favor of young Philip Rivers. Brees then signed with the New Orleans Saints. There, in Louisiana, Breeze became a legend.
In 15 seasons in the Big Easy, Breeze compiled a 142-86 record, made it to the Pro Bowl 13 times and won the Super Bowl once. For a dozen of those seasons, Lombardi was an offensive assistant and then the Breeze’s quarterbacks coach.

Brees and Herbert spent time together when the former Saint was in Chargers camp, and the two were impressed with each other.
Brees told reporters he was impressed with Herbert’s physicality, work ethic and intangibles. He also said he thinks heaven is the limit for a man like him.
According to Yahoo! Sport, Herbert liked to talk to Breeze, too. He said they watched film together, and Brees gave some technical advice on how to read defenses as an NFL quarterback. The young QB also revealed that this was just the beginning of the relationship between him and Breeze.
”He’s a guy I’ll always watch,” said Herbert, who sounded like an eager student of one of the best quarterbacks of all time.

Bree and Herbert aren’t the only ones building a relationship that they hope will bear fruit in the next season. It’s also the leadership.
Staley comes from the defensive side of the ball where he coached the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams. He was a QB in college, though. He played at Daytona and Mercyhurst, according to Sports Illustrated. In this second stage, his coach is none other than Lombardi.
The two are now working together, along with quarterbacks coach Shane Day, to create a bond with Herbert. All coaches do little and big things to get closer to their new star:
The Chargers’ new coach might send Justin Herbert to a late practice. Maybe he’ll text a picture of his scorecard when he sees the 23-year-old phenom playing golf with the boys after practice. On other occasions, Staley has sent a photo of his son Colin wearing jersey number 10 to the school.
It’s little things like that that allow a coach and QB to succeed together, as Brees and his head coach Sean Payton have done for a long time. Close relationships may not show up in practice, but with the right approach they should translate into profits.
