LA County health officials have announced that students exposed to the COVID-19 virus can enroll in in-person classes, even if they are not vaccinated.

(CBSLA) – LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Under new rules released Thursday, unvaccinated children in Los Angeles County who are exposed to COVID-19 will not be required to remain off school grounds.
K-12 children will be permitted to continue attending in-person instruction at school if they have been exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Health.

It’s referred to as a “modified quarantine” by the health department.

“Under some circumstances, a modified quarantine permits an unvaccinated student who has been exposed to a confirmed COVID-19 case to continue in-person teaching at school while limiting their activities outside of the classroom,” according to the department in a press release.
According to the health agency, the new procedure is in response to an examination of a four-week sample of data that indicates “relatively minimal transmission” of COVID-19 in schools.
According to the LACHD, there were 7,995 coronavirus infections among students and 1,193 among employees in L.A. County schools between Aug. 15 and Sept. 13. The overwhelming majority of these incidents took place in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
With an estimated 1.5 million pupils and 175,000 employees in Los Angeles County, this implies that 0.5 percent of kids and 0.7 percent of staff have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the school year.
Since the beginning of the fall semester, LAUSD has mandated weekly coronavirus testing for all students and employees, regardless of vaccination status.
Last Monday, the district also stated that in order to attend in-person courses, all eligible children aged 12 and above must be properly vaccinated against COVID-19.

The health agency stated, “Given the extensive testing of asymptomatic people at schools, this extremely low incidence of infection confirms the protection offered to children and employees at schools.”
Students who were exposed to COVID-19 at school or at a school-supervised activity in which both the person who was exposed and the sick person were masked and there was no “defined outbreak” will be subject to a modified quarantine.
During the modified quarantine, the exposed student must remain asymptomatic and stay at home save when attending courses or school activities.
They will also be subjected to testing twice a week. When the second test, performed at least five days after exposure, comes back negative, the modified quarantine will be lifted.
School districts are not obliged to provide the modified quarantine, according to L.A. County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer, who added that schools would need to have the means to implement all of its criteria. When both the unvaccinated student and the sick individual were wearing masks at all times, she admitted that it might be impossible to prove that the exposure happened in certain instances.
“It becomes difficult when kids are doing other things together,” Ferrer said on Thursday, referring to pupils dining together or participating in outside recess activities.
Only students, not instructors, are eligible for the modified quarantine process. The technique is also ineffective in the event of a proven COVID epidemic on campus.
