BALTIMORE, MD – The Baltimore Orioles lost their 19th game in a row Tuesday night, surrendering 19 hits and falling down by 11 runs early in a 14-8 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels.
Baltimore fell down 5-1 in the second inning, 8-1 in the third, and 13-2 in the fourth inning on their way to their worst losing streak since Kansas City lost 19 games in a row in 2005.
“When you’re down 13-2 after four innings, it’s difficult to remain in the game,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “To win in this league, you have to pitch in this league; you have to pitch in this league to remain competitive.”
During the skid, the Orioles have given up at least eight runs in 12 games and have been outscored 163-55. Baltimore has been winless since Aug. 2, and is only two games away from tying the club record most consecutive losses (established in 1988), as well as the modern-day mark of 23 set by the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies.
“This is a big gut check and a huge challenge,” Hyde added. “We’re attempting to maintain a positive attitude.”
The last major league club to lose 20 games in a row was the 1988 Baltimore Orioles, who started the season with a 21-game losing streak.
Baltimore’s fortunes rapidly deteriorated after Ryan Mountcastle’s first-inning home run gave them a 1-0 lead. Off youngster Spenser Watkins (2-6), No. 8 batter Jo Adell tripled in two runs, and Juan Lagares followed with a two-run homer.

Adell added a two-run single in the third, and Lagares drove in a run in the fifth with an RBI single.
Manager Joe Maddon said, “It’s one of those confidence stuff.” “It’s infectious in a positive way when you have your confidence flowing.”
Every starter for the Los Angeles Angels got a hit, including Shohei Ohtani, who had an eighth-inning single. With runners in scoring position, the Angels were 11 for 19.
“Up and down the lineup, we were hitting the strike zone very effectively tonight,” Maddon said. “It was a lot of fun to witness an offensive night.”
For the Orioles, Mountcastle hit two solo home runs, Anthony Santander went 4 for 5 with three RBIs, and Ramon Urias drove in three runs.
“A few of people were very good at swinging the bat,” Hyde added. “With our offense being down so much, I was pleased.”
Angels starter Dylan Bundy struggled to locate the strike zone against his old club for the first time since being traded in December 2019. He was removed after just nine hitters. The Orioles’ 2011 first-round selection walked three batters, struck out one, and allowed a home run, but only allowed one run when Junior Guerra (4-2) got two consecutive outs with the bases loaded.
