The NBA has announced its 2019-20 roster, which includes 109 international players from 39 countries. Giannis Antetokounmpo leads the list of international players with eight different countries represented on his roster.

This season marks the NBA’s 75th anniversary, and the league is looking for another entertaining season. This year, the league boasts the greatest talent among the clubs, with veterans vying for championships, young stars approaching their prime, and rookies just beginning their careers in the game. 

There are many players eager to show their value in the league, and many of them are foreigners for another year. This season, the NBA will include 109 foreign players, marking the eighth year in a row that 100 or more players will be on opening-night rosters. 

According to a press release, players from 39 nations will compete this season, with some of them dominating the game for many years. 

The NBA announced that 109 foreign players from 39 nations would be on the opening-night rosters for its historic 75th Anniversary Season, featuring a record number of players from Canada (18), Germany (seven), and the Bahamas (three), as well as a record number of players from Nigeria (five). The Raptors of Toronto led the league with a league-high ten foreign players on their opening-night rosters, representing nine different nations. The opening-night rosters for the 2021-22 season include at least 100 foreign players for the seventh straight season. The number of foreign players in the NBA has increased from five in 1946-47 to a league-high 113 at the start of the 2016-17 season. Canada is the most-represented nation outside of the United States for the seventh year in a row, followed by Australia, France, and Germany (seven players each). Each team has five players: Nigeria, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey.

Every year, the league strives to broaden its scope in order to become a more worldwide event that can assist individuals all around the world. This season, many nations are well-represented in the competition, showing how large the NBA has been since its start. 

Canada is the most-represented nation outside of the United States for the seventh year in a row, followed by Australia, France, and Germany (seven players each). Each team has five players: Nigeria, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey.

When Oklahoma City plays Utah tomorrow, Oct. 20 at 9 p.m. ET on NBA League Pass, Josh Giddey (Thunder; Australia) will become the first NBA Academy alumnus to play in the NBA. When the Thunder picked Giddey sixth overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, he became the first NBA Academy alumnus to be drafted.

Aside from the 109 players who reported on opening night, the league has more ballers on two-way contracts, which is a new high for the league. Teams are recognizing that potential exists everywhere and do not want to lose track of individuals who may be able to assist them in the future. 

A record 12 international players from seven nations are on “two-way” contracts, including six players who participated in BWB, in addition to the 109 foreign players on the 2021-22 opening-night squads. There are a handful of American players who have connections to other nations, including more than 30 players that had at least one African parent.
