Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was responsible for three of the five turnovers in their game against the Oakland Raiders. The team’s defense also struggled to stop the Raiders’ offense, which is why they lost 23-27.

Claypool, Chase
Despite failing to produce in the Steelers’ game against Las Vegas, wide receiver Chase Claypool remained one of the team’s primary weapons in the receiving corps. For the Steelers, he only caught three of nine total receptions for 70 yards and no touchdowns.
Most of the receivers appeared disconnected in their Week 2 game, as if they didn’t know which routes to run on the field. Miscommunications with the quarterback were also apparent throughout the game. Claypool, a Notre Dame product, has the potential to pull in those deep passes that were sent his way, and he can also perform a lot better than he did against the Raiders in his last appearance.
The Steelers will continue to rely on him on offense, and they can’t afford to have him put up another poor effort in Week 3.
Turner, Trai
The Steelers’ new-look offensive line has quickly become one of their greatest concerns going into the 2021 season. In two games, the whole unit seemed irritable, which hampered the flow of their attack, particularly their quarterback’s performance.
Trai Turner, the team’s right guard, was dismissed for an unsportsmanlike foul in the fourth quarter of their game against the Raiders. According to Pro Football Talk, he reportedly spit on rival defensive end Maxx Crosby, who got to complete the game but was also penalized for his role in the incident.
Turner, as a veteran of the Steelers offensive line, might have just attempted to maintain his composure during the situation. His teammates ultimately had to bear the brunt of his actions, as they were without him for the final minutes of the game. His absence made it much more difficult for the squad to attempt a late-game comeback, as the Steelers’ offense was unable to get any traction.
Fortunately for Trai Turner, despite his obvious participation in the debacle, he did not get a punishment from the league. The five-time Pro Bowler will have to steer clear of such behavior in the future and instead concentrate on helping his team win games.
Roethlisberger, Ben
The team’s rejigged offensive line has already had a significant effect on QB Ben Roethlisberger’s performance in the first two games. The veteran quarterback didn’t have a good day against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1, going 18-of-32 for 188 yards and a throwing touchdown.
In Week 2, the Steelers got off to a poor start against the Raiders and had to play catch-up in the second half. Roethlisberger finished the game with 295 yards passing on 27/40 attempts, a touchdown, and an interception. To make things worse, he sustained a pectoral injury in the game and has been restricted in recent practice ahead of Week 3’s matchup with the Bengals.
It may be Roethlisberger’s advanced age or his inability to run the ball, but the Steelers will need him to manage their offense more efficiently in the future. In order to avoid digging a big hole for themselves in their next games, Mike Tomlin will also have to encourage his teammates to come out with greater enthusiasm and strive for a fast start.
Fortunately for the Steelers, the season is still early, and their offensive line can develop more chemistry as a team to better protect their quarterback in the pocket. In the next weeks, Ben Roethlisberger will hopefully be able to ramp up the tempo and return to his former playing form.
