When New Zealand and Australia meet in Dubai on Sunday, they will be seeking to win their first T20 World Cup.

Both teams advanced to the final after incredible comeback triumphs in the semifinals, but who will win this weekend?

Carlos Brathwaite, a champion with West Indies in 2016, describes where the final will be won and lost, from the fight of the big-hitters to who can take the pressure on the grandest stage.

A simple toss of a coin

The toss is a greater factor in the United Arab Emirates than it should be because of the weather.

The competition will begin around 18:30 local time, which means the lights will be turned on, there will be dew, and whomever bowls second will have a tough task.

The side batting second has won 21 of the 32 games played from the Super 12 stage onwards. And the pursuing squad has won 11 of the 12 bouts played in Dubai.

Because of the dew, wrist spinners like Ish Sodhi of New Zealand and Adam Zampa of Australia will be unable to bowl overs 16 or 17 and attempt to break a partnership.

It’s also tough for seamers to close out a game and bowl yorkers because they don’t want the ball to slide out of their hands, be a full toss or a no-ball, and maybe allow a six or provide a free hit.

The dew has an effect on the pitch, and any inconsistencies in bounce or lateral movement in the second innings are mitigated by the fact that the ball comes on to the bat neatly. As a result, it is both a better time to bat and a more challenging time to bowl.

Warner’s most important wicket

During the Indian Premier League (IPL), all the news was about David Warner’s lack of form. He said that he was in good shape, but that he hadn’t played much cricket recently.

The Australia opener has proved himself correct with 236 runs at a strike rate of 148.42 in six World Cup matches.

It’s not just about how many runs he scores or how fast he scores them; if he stays in the game for an extended amount of time, like he did against Pakistan, it doesn’t expose Australia’s right-handed batting lineup.

Australia has five right-handers in slots two to six, with Aaron Finch, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis.

If New Zealand can catch Warner early, left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner and leg-spinner Sodhi will be able to play a bigger role in the game.

They’ll have to bowl to a right-hand and left-hand combination if they don’t get Warner early, which might knock the spinners out of the game, especially Santner.

The big hitters vs. the big hitters

A good match-up between New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips and Jimmy Neesham against Australia’s Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade.

Both teams tracked down their semi-final objectives in a similar manner, with some exciting innings from their middle-order bats.

New Zealand defeated England by an over, scoring 60 in four overs, with Neesham hitting a match-winning 27 off 11 balls, while Phillips has a strike rate of 142.89 in T20 internationals.

Australia trounced Pakistan by 52 runs in four overs, with an over to spare, thanks to Stoinis’ unbeaten 40 off 31 deliveries and Wade’s spectacular 40 not out off just 17 deliveries.

Teams have had to create a decent foundation in a competition where scoring rapidly throughout the innings has been difficult.

Then it’s a question of finding someone who can fill that X-factor job.

Who will be able to manage the stress better?

Australia and New Zealand are quite similarly matched, and their playing styles have been consistent throughout: go for broke on the powerplay, consolidate in the middle overs, and then hope for the best from the back-end hitters.

As we see in many athletic championships, it may come down to who can maintain their composure and grab the key moments.

One ball from Neesham fell between England fielders Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone in the semi-finals, while Pakistan’s Hassan Ali critically dropped Wade before he smashed three consecutive sixes to win the match.

The fielding side failed to capitalize on those two key opportunities, and as a result, they lost the game.

The players, on the other hand, will not be intimidated by the occasion on Sunday. They’ll be itching to be a part of their country’s first T20 World Cup victory.

Australia has won the 50-over World Cup five times, while New Zealand reached the 50-over final in 2019 and won the World Test Championship final this year.

Both teams’ players have great experience playing in high-pressure franchise events such as the IPL, which will help them succeed.

What does a World Cup victory imply?

There were a lot of issues about Australia coach Justin Langer and his team’s culture before the tournamentexternal-link.

They were thrashed in Twenty20 series in the West Indies and Bangladesh, and there were rumors of players rebelling against Langer in the media.

So winning the T20 World Cup would be huge for Australia and would help to unite the squad ahead of the Ashes series against England this winter.

On the other side, there is a perception that New Zealand cricket is entering a golden age, and a T20 World Cup victory will say a lot about this set of players.

They did so well in the 2019 World Cup that everyone thought they got a raw deal when they lost the final to England in the super over despite scoring the same amount of runs.

But the graciousness with which they accepted loss in a contentious game, as well as the manner in which they maintained their composure throughout, won them many admirers.

Many people were ecstatic for them when they defeated India to win the maiden World Test Championship.

If New Zealand can win two of the three trophies, it will demonstrate to the rest of the globe that good folks don’t have to finish last.

Carlos Brathwaite was chatting with Kal Sajad of Sport.
