While the present NBA is frequently referred to as the “pace-and-space” age, the fact is that it moves at a snail’s pace when compared to the NBA’s shot-clock era. The 24-second clock changed professional basketball when it was introduced in 1954 to prevent teams from bringing play to a standstill.
The Syracuse Nationals and Minneapolis Lakers were the NBA’s quickest teams in 1953–54, the final year before the clock was introduced. Each team had 93.5 possessions per game on average. The Rochester Royals became the NBA’s slowest club the next season, averaging 99.5 possessions per night.
Every club in the league had at least 100 possessions every night by 1956-57. With a league-leading shooting percentage of 38.7%, there were mountains of rebounds to be had.
It’s no wonder, therefore, that the game’s two most productive rebounders are from the 1950s and 1960s, the NBA’s fastest-paced period. With 23,924 boards, Wilt Chamberlain is the all-time leader. Bill Russell is in second place with 21,620 points. No other player has surpassed 20,000 points, and no current player is among the top ten all-time scorers.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ Dwight Howard is 36 years old and in his 18th NBA season. But don’t be fooled by his 5.4 rebounds per game average this season. For the most of his career, Howard was a rebounding machine. Between 2007 and 2013, he led the league in rebounding five times in six seasons, averaging more than ten per game from his debut season in 2004–05 until his senior year in 2017–18.
With 11.9% rebounds per game, Howard ranks second among current players. Only Andre Drummond of the Philadelphia 76ers, who averages 13.6 boards per game, is ahead of him.
In his career, Howard has racked up 14,401 rebounds. Howard needs 64 more rebounds to overtake Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond for 10th place on the all-time record. Kevin Garnett (14,662), who is in ninth position, and Robert Parish, who is in eighth place with 14,715, are in range for Howard.

On the active rebounding list, the Lakers are well-represented, with five of the top ten players presently on the team.
Only one other current player has accumulated more than 10,000 points. DeAndre Jordan, Howard’s Lakers teammate, snagged his 10,000th career missed shot against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Dec. 10 and now ranks second among current players with 10,002.
Among active players, a third LA player is in third place. With 9,838 points, LeBron James is closing in on 10,000 for his career.
Drummond (9,091), LaMarcus Aldridge of the Brooklyn Nets (8,615), Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love (8,272), Paul Millsap of the Brooklyn Nets (7,636), Carmelo Anthony of the Lakers (7,631), and Boston Celtics center Al Horford round out the top ten (7,424). The group’s lone guard is ranked tenth.
Russell Westbrook, a point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, has racked up 7,170 rebounds in his career. It’s no surprise that he made this list as the all-time leader in triple-doubles.
